NCAA Women's Soccer Sweet 16: Marquette vs BYU

The Golden Eagles face off with the regional 1 seed Cougars for a spot in the College Cup quarterfinals.

Marquette and BYU took slightly different paths through the second round to get to the Sweet 16. Marquette got a equalizer as the first half drew to a close and tacked on two second half goals to roll past Princeton.

BYU, on the other hand, played 88 minutes of scoreless soccer with Auburn before the Tigers were whistled for a foul just barely inside the 18 yard box, resulting in a penalty kick for BYU. Carlee Payne Holmoe scored easily on the PK with 44 seconds left in the match, giving BYU the win. The foul's at the 1:33 mark of this video, so take a look for yourself and decide whether the referee had more to do with the outcome of that match than the players involved in it.

Regional 4 seed Marquette and 1 seed BYU will face off tonight at 6pm Central time in Provo. It looks like the match will be available for free streaming through BYUTVSports.com here, and I'm sure you'll be able to listen to WMUR's David Tukesbrey call the match here.

The Cougars won the West Coast Conference title outright, and as such, it's unsurprising to find BYU all over the WCC's postseason awards. Senior defender Lindsi Lisonbee Cutshall is the 2012 WCC Player Of The Year after BYU allowed only 10 goals all season and averaged just 7.7 shots allowed per game. Keeper Erica Owens was named Goalkeeper of the year after leading the WCC in goals-against average, save percentage, and total shutouts. Michele Murphy earned Freshman Of The Year honors by leading BYU in goals with eight and adding seven assists. Murphy ended up tied for the team lead in points with Payne Holmoe. Three Cougars were named to the All-WCC First Team and three more were on the Second Team.
