Bob Ford: Phillies second baseman Chase Utley sounds confident he can come back

Well, here it is, with July crowding June, and Utley still hasn't played an inning of major-league baseball this season. If all goes well Tuesday night in Allentown, where Utley will play one more rehabilitation game with the triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs, he is scheduled to get on the field for the Phillies the following night against the Pirates.

Utley took part in pregame fielding and batting practice with the Phils on Monday night, and afterward he sat still for the predictable questions about his impending return and dispensed with answers that were just as predictable.

And sounded a lot like the same things he said in February.

"It's probably been a few years since I've had this much strength in my legs," Utley said. "But again, I think this is a work in progress. I think I can get them stronger. This is just the initial starting point, and I can build on it. Obviously, I'm optimistic, but I think I need to be at this point."

There wasn't much to read from words that really can be trusted, not because Utley doesn't believe them at the moment, and not because his optimism is as chronic as the pain that has bedeviled him for several seasons. The fact is that neither Utley, nor his physical trainer, nor the exercise program, nor the careful scheduling planned by Charlie Manuel will decide whether Utley will stay on the field for the rest of the season. The knees will decide, and they have been traitors before.

"When we put him out there, we want to make absolutely sure that he is ready to play in the big leagues, and he's not going to have a setback and stuff like that," Manuel said. "We want to make sure that he's absolutely ready."

Unfortunately, there's no way to be sure. That's partly because the pain is neither predictable nor preventable and partly because nobody, including those in the Phillies organization, is ever really sure whether Utley is being entirely forthcoming about his condition.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The new playoff system means big money for major college football, as much as a half-billion dollars per year just in television rights alone.

That has Texas coach Mack Brown ? among others ? wondering if some of that windfall should be heading the players way.

"In my opinion, with the amount of money the playoff will generate, I hope we can revisit the student-athlete stipend," Brown tweeted soon after the new, semifinal format was approved by university presidents Tuesday in Washington.

"It will be a very lucrative event and those young people are the ones that make it all possible," he added.

Even before the plan had a presidential seal of approval, a group of former and current athletes was pushing for some of the newfound wealth to be spent on player safety and health ? an issue that becomes more important as the season expands.

The current Bowl Championship Series television deal with ESPN, plus the Rose Bowl's separate agreement with ABC, pay the major college football schools about $155 million per year. That money is distributed unevenly throughout college football, with power conferences such as the Big Ten and Big 12 getting more for their members than others such as the Mountain West and Conference USA.

The commissioners working on the playoff system have been reluctant to speculate on exactly how much the TV rights for it will be worth, but they all agree it'll be at least double.

Also, the new national title game will go to the highest-bidding city, which will pour millions more into the coffers of FBS schools. Officials in Arlington, Texas, home of the Cotton Bowl, and Atlanta, where the Chick-fil-A Bowl is played, are already lining up to make a pitch.

West Virginia Athletic Director Oliver Luck said that, to those who want the players to receive more money, all that playoff cash "is at least one more arrow in their quiver."

While NCAA President Mark Emmert has argued strongly against paying football players like professionals, in a manner that South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has been pushing the past two years, the fight over raising student compensation already has started.

Last year, new legislation was approved that would have allowed schools to offer a $2,000 stipend, in addition to their scholarship, toward what the NCAA calls the full cost-of-attendance.

But the measure was tossed into limbo after more than 100 schools asked for an override vote. Critics were concerned about whether all schools would be able to afford it, especially with so many facing budget crunches in the economic downturn. Also, there is concern that the schools which can afford to pay the extra stipend will gain an advantage in recruiting.

Still, Emmert has said he would still like it passed, and he praised the approval of a new postseason format to replace the BCS.

"I commend the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee on its leadership to move to a playoff model," he said. "I remain confident that as the details of the new format are determined in the coming weeks, presidents will continue to keep student-athlete well-being, both in the classroom and on the field, front of mind."

Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said it's too soon to start talking about what do with the extra money.

"I think there's still a lot of work to be vetting out, and how the revenue is going to be distributed is the first step in that," he said. "We haven't gotten that far along in the process but I expect over the course of the next academic year we will do that in meetings."

Luck said he had been telling his bosses, even before the new playoff format, that they should start budgeting for the increased cost of scholarships.

"I always kind of figured it was inevitable," he said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

Cutting back would seem to be off the board at this point, Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said. With teams being asked to play as many as 15 games in a season now, he said there better not be any more talk about reducing the 85-scholarship limit.

"Any talk about that going forward has to cease," he said. "You're going to need more players to get through a season healthy."

Washington State coach Mike Leach said while he has no problem with giving players a bigger scholarship, maybe the extra money could go toward more scholarships.

"Give everybody five more scholarships, five more opportunities for guys to go to school," he said.

The National College Players Association, an advocacy group made up of 17,000 current and former Division I student-athletes, isn't looking for players to be paid as much as it would like more money spent to keep them safe.

Their point is the national title winner is going to start camp in August 2014 and finish the season on Jan. 12, 2015, with a regular season, conference title game, semifinal and final in between. Not so long ago, NFL teams had only a 14-game regular season.

The group's president, former UCLA football player Ramogi Huma, was in Washington and arrived at the hotel where the presidents and commissioners a few minutes before the meeting started.

"Our universities shouldn't add extra games without adding extra protections to minimize the head trauma risks associated with contact sports," Huma said.

Last month Gini Dietrich asked, ?Is Facebook making us more lonely??

Her post was based on a study in The Atlantic, concluding that indeed people seem to be more lonely in the age of social media.

The theory is that greater numbers of connections had not led to more meaningful ones. Gini?s reaction is she was torn about how she felt.

But I was not torn.

Although the study had ?a number of valid observations, I disagree it is making us more lonely. The social media tools aren?t to blame; how we use them is the culprit.

I lost my wife Aimee in a boating accident a week before Christmas this past year. In the immediate aftermath of this terrible loss ? not ?not only to me but also to our then three-year old daughter, Aimee?s family, loved ones, and friends ? I turned to social media.

Other than the closest family and friends whom I called, I made the announcement of Aimee?s death via Facebook the day after the accident. That same day, I started a blog titled Missing Aimee, through which I?ve shared my grief process. As word began to spread through various social media outlets, much needed support came pouring in.

Facebook clearly was not contributing to loneliness ? it was facilitating the opposite. Social media in general, were saving my life. All those connections I?d made were coming through for me.

The reason those connections were so valuable was because of the effort I?d made in the years prior to that tragic day, when I had built and maintained real relationships with the people I was connected to via social media.

In other words:

I treat my online relationships the same way I treat my offline relationships. I treat them like they?re important to me, because they are.

So when the proverbial stuff hit the fan in my life, a lot of those ?connections? were real friends. The love, support, and help I needed were there because those people genuinely cared about me.

In their tough times, I had been there for them.?I had invested time in those relationships. Many of these connections were more than just a number of ?friends? or ?followers? in a social media profile. They were real, in the most important sense of the word.

Before the advent of social media, we all knew popular people who had lots of friends. But most of those friendships were pretty shallow and didn?t mean much in the long run. Today is no different. It?s just virtual and more global than ever.

There are many articles debating the quality of?online vs. offline relationships.

People, I?m here to tell you that it doesn?t make a difference. Yes, I believe it?s important to get to know people ?in real life? and spend face time with them, but you can have a real friendship with someone without it.

Where the rubber really meets the road, what truly determines the quality of the relationships in your life, online or off, is the time you invest in them.

High unemployment-because-no jobs or freeloaders?

I was recently reading a blog which was way off subject and the subject of free trade came up, someone blamed free trade for unemployment, that dialectic is quite comical, or rather lack of dialectic ability, or perhaps the lack of capacity for abstract thought.

I have been working since the Carter Administration, and if I truly wanted a job I could find one. Sometimes I might not work in my field of expertise, but I found a job. I have done a lot of really hard work too, that most people would never do in their lifetime, because they think it?s too hard or below them. No matter what I could always find a job.

My opinion as much as I hate to admit it because it argues somewhat for President Obama, is that unemployment really would not be as bad as it is, IF some people would take the jobs, instead of sucking off the Government programs. I see people in line at Walmart, Krogar, using food stamps getting steaks, shrimp, all kinds of snacks and Ice Cream etc, luxuries not necessities, yet some people who are working can?t afford meat every day. I also see some of these same people driving brand new cars,how is that if they cant work, or cant find jobs?

So why would these people, who have been taught how to live off these programs, want to work? As they have children and their children learn the same thing, wont our unemployment keep going up with the growing population of these parasites?

Maybe drug testing should be instituted for welfare, food stamp recipients, or for that matter anyone on a government subsidiary, everyone working for the government has to take drug test, shouldn?t the people leaching off the government and tax payers have to take drug test?

All of the countries I have visited in the past don?t have programs like we do here in the US,promoting leaches, as a result, they have less unemployment, yes some people work jobs they don?t really like, but they work until they find a better one.

Maybe if we got rid of some of the leaches, our unemployment would go down? Instead of blaming unemployment on things like free trade, maybe we should cut our programs and put that money to use on people that truly need it.

Madison accepting development proposals for Union Corners

A blighted piece of land along one of Madison's busiest streets could soon see new life.

Mayor pleased with Webster development bids

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said he finds the dual Webster Block bids, one each from the Buffalo Sabres and developer Carl Paladino, "very strong."

The Sabres and Paladino were among the three entities that responded by the June 15 deadline with development proposals for the nearly two-acre Webster Block property that across the street from First Niagara Center and HSBC Atrium. Currently a 300-car surface parking lot, the property sits just south of the Buffalo News building and the under-renovation, $30 million One Canalside Building.

"Each was well-presented," Brown said. "I am very pleased by what I saw. They were high-quality proposals."

Brown said the city is reviewing the bids and will award the development rights for the key downtown Buffalo parcel by Aug. 15. The mayor wants construction on the block to begin by next summer.

Sources said the Sabres are proposing to construct a pair of hockey rinks, one with seating for a couple hundred of spectators and the other with perhaps as much seating for 1,500 people. The rinks would be used by local groups, hockey organization and skating groups. The NHL team may occasionally use one of the rinks if First Niagara Center is booked with a concert, lacrosse game or other special event.

The project would also include a full-service, nationally-branded hotel, a 1,000 car parking facility and some streetscape retail along Main and Perry streets.

Paladino has offered to construct a 700,000-square-foot, 12-story mixed use project that would house a 140-room brand name hotel, 42 upscale, market-rate apartments and 110,000-square-feet of Class A office space.

First floor retail and restaurants are proposed along Main, Scott and Perry streets.

"It is clear to me that the Webster Block project will be a significant benefit to not only the people of Buffalo, but all of Western New York," Brown said.

The estimated costs of each proposal are undetermined at this time.

Robert Tornambe, M.D.: Coping With the Death of Your Pet

Our dog Lily died today. HuffPost readers may remember her, as she was featured in a blog I wrote last year about the concept of canine-assisted therapy. She was a therapy dog who visited hospitals, nursing homes, schools for children with learning disabilities and even a juvenile correction center. She was a working dog, a 120-pound bullmastiff who was kind, goofy, as gentle as a lamb, and a beloved member of our family.

Ironically, the most popular therapy dog at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center succumbed to lymph node cancer. She was only 7 years old. She is survived by my wife and Lily's therapy partner, Valerie, our two children (Lily's human siblings) and me. I can't begin to describe the sorrow and grief that I am feeling right now. More importantly, how can I help my wife and children cope?

For starters, it is important to comprehend the five stages of grief.

Denial: "This can't be happening to me."
Anger: "Why is this happening? Who is to blame?"
Bargaining: "Make this not happen, and in return I will ____."
Depression: "I'm too sad to do anything."
Acceptance: "I'm at peace with what happened."

It is necessary to experience and deal with each stage. It is especially important to recognize and channel the anger phase. Do not deny or hide it, express it. Cry, yell, scream, or whatever it takes to allow the anger to dissipate and permit you to grieve and eventually accept the loss.

Grieving is a process without a predetermined time frame. The level of grief depends on several factors, including your age and personality, age of the pet, and the circumstances of the pet's death. Some people take longer than others. Often, single pet owners who live alone take longer to grieve because their dog or cat played such a large role in their lives. The same is true for disabled people who lose their therapy- or seeing-eye dog, because the animal was a companion and a vital enabler.

Grief can be a confusing experience for children. The death of a pet is often the first time children are subjected to such sorrow. Our kids literally grew up with Lily, but our youngest son Luca could not understand why he was unable to cry when Lily first died. I explained to him that we all grieve differently, while he may not cry now, it may happen tomorrow, or much later, and that is OK. Experts say that kids usually react to the way parents behave in many situations, and grieving is a good example. If parents react irrationally or dramatically during the grieving process, children mimic that response. Adults should not hide their emotions either. It is normal for a man to cry, for instance, and kids must understand that. Repressed emotions can be extremely unhealthy.

If possible, allow your children to say goodbye. If euthanasia is necessary, be honest, don't tell them that the pet went to sleep or went away, as that will cause confusion and resentment when they do fully understand. Explain the circumstances and try to get them to talk about it and ask questions. Create a memento, a photo or paw print for them to have forever, but especially during the grieving process. Don't rush to replace the pet right away; allow your child to finish grieving.

Psychologists also often offer these recommendations.

- Don't let anyone tell you how you feel. Many friends are not "pet people" and do not understand or appreciate your angst. Avoid those friends for a while.

- Reach out to those people who have pets or to those who have experienced loss of a beloved dog or cat for consolation and company.

- Rituals help healing. Have a memorial service or funeral to honor your pet and allow you to work toward closure.

- Create a legacy. Plant a tree or donate to an animal shelter or vet school in the name of your deceased pet.

- Look after yourself. The grieving process is exhausting. Try to eat in a healthy fashion, drink lots of water (crying is dehydrating!), exercise and watch the alcohol intake. Treat the grieving process like a marathon, and stay healthy to finish.

- Maintain an active schedule. Replace time normally spent with your pet with other activities to keep you busy to avoid depression. Volunteer at a hospital or nursing home. When you are ready, volunteer at an animal shelter or ask to walk a friend's dog on occasion. Stay busy!

I am certain that many of you have lost a beloved pet. Please write in and share your ideas and recommendations for dealing with the death of your pet.

Just researching and writing this blog has been extremely helpful for me to deal with the loss of our Lily. Just the same, please excuse me while I have a good long cry. Farewell my girl.

Samsung Series 3 Chromebox (XE300M22)

Do you need a desktop PC that runs just a Web browser? That's the premise behind the Samsung Series 3 Chromebox (XE300M22) ($329.99 list). It's a compact nettop that really needs a fast Internet connection to be truly useful, but as a Web machine, it's neat. You won't have to worry about managing the system, beyond keeping track of your Google.com account, so it's a great fit for that relative who "needs the Facebook," but doesn't want a Windows PC because of previous "issues" with downloads and viruses that you've had to clean up. It'll take users where they need to go, including Flash-heavy sites that would bog down an Android tablet or not work at all on an iPad. Think of it as a "Web-only PC-lite", and you've got the right idea.

Design and Features
The Chromebox looks like a modern mini desktop. It's built into a square chassis that's about 1.3 by 7.5 by 7.5 inches (HWD), so it's a smidge smaller than the Apple Mac mini (Thunderbolt) ($799 list, 4.5 stars). Like the Mac mini, the Chromebox has an internal power supply, so you won't have to figure out where to place a power brick. This helps reduce clutter. Since it's basically a Web device, there's no need for an optical drive. The system comes with a 16GB SSD as the boot drive, but you can attach an external USB drive for more storage (not that you would need it, but more on that below).

The Chromebox comes with good connectivity with one misstep. There are six USB 2.0 ports, DVI, Ethernet, audio, and two DP++ DisplayPorts. DP++ means that the ports are capable of supporting up to 2,460 by 1,600 resolution displays. It would've been more useful to add an HDMI port for connectivity with an HDTV or HDMI monitor. While DisplayPort is becoming common in business environments, DisplayPort is rare on consumer-grade monitors. You'll need an HDMI adapter to use the Chromebox with an HDTV. The Chromebox can be connected to the Internet via the Gigabit Ethernet port, or via 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. The system is essentially a Web terminal, and is pretty much a limited-use brick without a broadband connection. Keyboard and mouse are optional, but you can use any USB keyboard and mouse you have lying around, including wireless models with a USB dongle.

The system comes with 4GB of RAM, which is nice, since that amount will allow you to have many tabs open in the Chrome browser. The memory is not upgradeable. With 16GB of SSD and 4GB of RAM, you're actually in good shape for a web terminal, since you won't ever have to worry about running resource-hogging apps like Adobe Creative Suite CS6 or Microsoft Office. The system boots into whatever environment you have setup on your Chrome browser on your PC or Mac, provided you have a Google.com account. You need a Google account of some kind to setup the system (corporate accounts with Gmail work), and then once it's setup you can enable guest access. Another plus is that since the system isn't running Windows or MacOS X, you'll have less malware threats to worry about, though you'll still have to be vigilant protecting your online personal info (like passwords and account numbers).

If you've already setup the Chrome browser on your PC or Mac with extensions, bookmarks, and other customizations, these will automatically be installed and run. Basically, the familiar Chrome you use at home or at work will carry over to the Chromebox. It's neat, but it also shows the power and danger of your Google account: be careful with your username and password and keep your online identity safe! Goggle's Chrome web store is fully accessible, and any apps you've loaded to your Google account will show up. These are separate from any apps you have on your Android device(s), since they're purely web apps. Note that like in Chrome on your PC or Mac, all Chrome apps will work as web apps do, in a tab in the browser. It won't look like a dedicated app unless you use the full screen mode. On the other hand you can disconnect tabs from the main browsing window to give each web app it's "own" window. It's mainly a matter of aesthetics, but still worth noting for those used to working in PC-based Windows environments.

Performance
The Chromebox acts like a fast nettop. The 16GB SSD certainly helps keep the boot time to a few seconds and reawake from sleep takes only a second or so (if you have an older LCD screen, the Chromebox should be up and running before the screen's backlight warms up). The system features a 1.9GHz Intel Celeron B840 dual-core processor with Intel HD Graphics 3000. While that doesn't seem too powerful, it's based on 2nd-generation Intel Core (AKA, Sandy Bridge) technology, and it's sufficient for the Web-based use it will get. Browsing several sites at once was a painless experience on our 40Mbps corporate Internet connection, and it was equally fast over 802.11 a/g/n 5GHz, 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz, and on the Gigabit Ethernet port. Recent 1080p trailers like the one for Disney's upcoming Wreck-It Ralph played smoothly without any hiccups, and older trailers like the 1080p HD trailer for 2009's Star Trek looked fine. Bringing up files in Google Docs was a snappy process, and while I wouldn't recommend calculating a 200,000 row spreadsheet on the Chromebox, it was fast enough for quick edits and emails. That said, if you have a slow Internet connection at home (say a DSL line), your experience might vary.

Since it's the first of its kind, the Chromebox doesn't directly compare to nettops like the Lenovo IdeaCentre Q180 ($369 direct, 4 stars) and the Editor's Choice for nettops Acer Revo RL100-UR20P ($569.99 list, 4 stars), since it doesn't come with Windows, but it's certainly a possible fourth or fifth computer in the house. It's a good Web terminal for your novice user who just needs to get to the Web, and it will be a better Web experience than using a tablet like an iPad if you need a large screen and Flash support (which the iPad doesn't have). Other nettop systems like the Cybernet ZPC-D5 ($384 direct, 3 stars) (8:41 Handbrake, 20:51 CS5) are closer to the Chromebox's price and capabilities, but unlike the Chromebox, the ZPC-D5 can work independent of the Internet. The ZPC-D5 will feel slower however, with its spinning hard drive and Atom processor. Essentially, the Chromebox is good for the user who needs the full Internet, but doesn't need the Windows experience or run Windows or Mac apps.

Heartburn is a primary indicator that your body is not well.

I have very specific memories of being highly acidic prior to my diagnosis of heart disease.

I recall on a daily basis having issues with stomach acid and many nights literally waking up choking on acid reflux.? I was chewing tums, drinking baking soda and googling all kinds of home remedies ? one remedy was to drink a vinegar and mustard mix, not in the least bit enjoyable.? I also would drink huge amounts of milk in an effort to quell the burn; I now understand that was the equivalent of adding gas to the fire.

I cannot possibly encompass all the benefits of maintaining a pH balanced body.? Volumes have been written however we continue to simply look for a quick fix vs. understanding the mechanics of acid reflux.

Acid reflux is highly indicative serious health issues.? A normal body operates in a highly?oxygenated environment and in the year and half of eating a Plant Based diet I have not had one episode of acid reflux.? This includes eating tomatoes, citrus, and spicy foods (cayenne, wasabi, horseradish, hot peppers, etc..)?which are often included in the list of foods to avoid.? I truly believe that animal protein and oil causes 99% of all heartburn episodes.

pH Balanced is a core concept of health and is widely ignored in our day-to-day lives.??Most of us instantly seek instant relief and we are served up a plethora of drugs for?acid reflux.? Unfortunately , Plop, plop, fizz, fizz? is simply a band-aid for a much deeper issues.? Although the drugs are highly effective in relieving symptoms in the short-term they are absolutely not preventative.

The term pH means ?potential of hydrogen? and refers to the amount of hydrogen in a substance. A pH of 7 is considered neutral; anything below is acidic, while anything above a 7 is alkaline. The pH in your blood must remain within a very narrow range, between 7.35 and 7.45 or you become sick and can die. Both metabolic factors and respiratory factors control pH in your blood. Metabolic factors include the breakdown and elimination of waste products normally created by your body. Respiratory factors include the amount of carbon dioxide you elimination from the lungs when you breathe; excess carbon dioxide acidifies your blood.

When you eat too much sugar, processed foods, animal protein and caffeine, your body becomes too acidic. This acidic environment causes your cells to retain less oxygen than they would if you had an alkaline climate within your cells. Consequently, this acidic environment creates an optimal atmosphere for cancer cells to multiply and thrive. Therefore, by following an alkaline diet, you increase the oxygen levels in your cells, which ultimately inhibits the growth and development of cancer cells and might even ?cure? your cancer.? Cancer cannot survive in an oxygen rich environment.

Top?Nine Causes of Acidity

Chocolate:? Chocolate contains caffeine and other stimulants such as theobromine, which cause reflux.? Chocolate is high in fat, and fat causes reflux.

Fried Food:?Fried food is the single most recognized cause of reflux. It is also the food most often associated with heartburn, which is chest pain from esophageal reflux.
Deep-fried (or even not-so-deep-fried) foods are on the ?bad list? because of their high fat content

Alcohol:? Alcohol is believed to relax the valve at the bottom of the esophagus (where it joins the stomach), leading to reflux.

Dairy:? All high-fat foods cause reflux

Meats:? Acid reflux is caused by high-fat cuts of meat?beef, pork, lamb?which stay longer in the stomach and increase the chance of acid reflux.

Caffeine:? Coffee is highly acidic and it can stimulate the hypersecretion of gastric acids. Decaffeinated coffee has been shown to increase acidity to a greater degree than either regular coffee or caffeine alone.? Coffee tends to speed up the process of gastric emptying, which may result in highly acidic stomach contents passing into the small intestine more rapidly than normal.? This may lead to injury of the intestinal tissue

Tobacco:? ?Nicotine increases the production of stomach acid, harming the esophagus. Tobacco smoke seems to directly irritate the esophagus lining,?reducing saliva production. This causes two problems. When you swallow, saliva helps push acid down, out of the esophagus and into the stomach. Saliva also contains bicarbonate, which is a mild acid neutralizer. ?So a reduction in saliva can make your acid reflux worse.

Stress:? Although the relationship between stress and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux is still unclear, evidence suggests that anxiety, along with exhaustion resulting from sustained stress, are both associated with exacerbation of heartburn and esophageal reflux.

Why you can't get 'Call Me Maybe' out of your head

Singer Carly Rae Jepsen just met you. And this is crazy. But here she is singing at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto on Sunday, so call her, maybe?

It seems impossible to hide from Carly Rae Jepsen's ?Call Me Maybe.? Someone auto-tuned videos of President Obama so he performs it; The Roots and Jimmy Fallon played it with toy musical instruments; the Harvard baseball team, the Southern Methodist University women?s rowing team, and the Miami Dolphin cheerleaders all danced to the ditty; and the bubble gum pop song has taken over all the airwaves.

And maybe your brainwaves -- does it seem like ?Call Me Maybe? is on repeat in your head? You?re not alone; you have an earworm.?Earworms, or involuntary imagery of music, burrow their way into the subconscious, making a home in the brain. And "Call Me Maybe" is arguably the earwormiest song in recent memory.?

?Earworms is a colloquial name for a phenomena in music psychology?an experience when you get a song or a piece of song such as chorus [stuck in your head] without a willing attempt to experience a musical memory,? says Lassi A. Liikkanen, who published two papers about earworms recently in the journals Psychology of Music?and Musicae Scientiae. ??

People frequently experience earworms after hearing a new songs and recognizing a few snippets of lyrics and melody. ?

?Involuntary imagery of music is based on our skill to remember music, but for some reason feels out of control. But is perfectly normal,? explains, Liikkanen, a researcher at Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT in Finland.

Songs such as ?Call Me Maybe? or fun's ?We Are Young? seem to pop into our brains against our will. Seeing an album cover or recalling a memory associated with a song can induce an earworm. Liikkanen, who surveyed more than 12,000 Finish Internet users about earworms, found that nearly 90 percent of people experience involuntary imagery of music.

?Some times these involuntary music experiences are tied to a life experience and it is congruent with mood,? he says. ?Even if you haven?t heard a song for weeks, months, decades [hearing the song sparks] a key memory.?

He discovered that women catch earworms more than men and younger generations have the bug more frequently than older folks. While there is little evidence about why these differences occur, Liikkanen has a few theories.

Women might be more attuned to their mental lives, possibly connecting songs with meaningful moments more frequently. When it comes to earworms and older people, it seems that older folks listen to music less and might not have as great of memory retention as they once had.

In general, people who play or write music hear earworms more than those simple music listeners.

?A lot of the great composers claim they were hearing the music in their heads ? it happens with the not so [great] composers,? Liikkanen says. While the more musical education one has the more involuntary imagery of music occurs at some point it evens out?people with the highest levels of music education reported fewer recurrent earworms.

Those with a form of OCD might hear earworms an excessive amount and people suffering auditory hallucinations sometimes also hear snippets of songs repeatedly. In these cases, Liikkanen says people should consult a psychiatrist for treatment.

?People consider [earworms] entertaining and fun occasions when they emerge,? he says. ?Music is wonderfully complicated in human psychology.???

Dying to extract "Call Me Maybe" from your brain? It's not so simple. Liikkanen suggests avoiding all music and cues connected with the song. Cues can be as seemingly insignificant as hearing the title of the song or the artist's name -- so you'll need a moratorium on anything beginning with the words "call me." Good luck with that.?
