Samsung Galaxy Note II gets early benchmark treatment at IFA

DNP Samsung Galaxy Note II gets early benchmark treatment at IFA

Here at IFA, the Galaxy Note II's glossy plastic build is practically fading under the ambush of cameras snapping away at Samsung's booth, but clearly this phone is more than just a (super sized) pretty face, and it's time to take a look at what's under the hood. As mentioned in our hands-on, Samsung upgraded the original Note's dual-core 1.4GHz chipset to a quad-core 1.6GHz Exynos processor. We put the device to the test today to see how those amped-up insides reflect in the Note II's benchmark scores. As you'll see below, Sammy's latest handset fares significantly better than the original Note and the Galaxy S III.

Oh, what a difference a processor makes. Clearly the step up to a quad-core CPU is to thank for the large performance delta between the Note II and the last-gen Note, though the international version of the Galaxy S III, with a quad-core 1.4Ghz Exynos processor, also falls behind in Quadrant and other tests. The Note II also trumped its Samsung siblings on the browser-focused Vellamo benchmark, which hints at snappier performance on this phone. The phone's graphics chops look pretty good, too, if the GL Benchmark score is any indication. Our testing got cut short before we could run SunSpider, but we'll add that figure shortly.

Update: We've added SunSpider as well -- the device clocked in at 1,330ms, which is a hair faster than the Galaxy S III.

Samsung Brings Its S-Pen To Its Series 5 and 7 Slate PCs With Detachable Keyboards

Samsung Series 5 and 7The half-tablet, half-notebook space is filling up quickly. Samsung unveiled its products and has a different take on that market thanks to the S-Pen stylus that was originally created for the Galaxy Note series. It introduced the updated version of its Series 5 and Series 7 slate PCs during its IFA 2012 press conference in Berlin today. The most important new feature is the addition of the S-Pen that will allow you to take handwritten notes or draw sketches. In the Galaxy Note 10.1 review, the S-Pen felt like a great combination with a 10.1 screen. S-Pen apps were a joy to use. Yet, Windows 8 S-Pen apps remain to be seen.

Asia stocks mostly down amid economic uncertainty

(AP) ? Shares fell Thursday in Asia, as positive news on U.S. economic growth dashed hopes for fresh measures by the Federal Reserve, and gloomy retail sales in Japan deepened concern over its recovery.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange's benchmark Nikkei fell 1.1 percent to 8,970 and South Korea's Kospi slipped 1.2 percent to 1,906.52. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index also was down 1.3 percent to 19,528.86, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.9 percent to 4,316.30.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia and mainland China fell while shares edged higher in New Zealand and Taiwan.

Investors are waiting for signs of fresh moves to revive the U.S. economic recovery that could come in a key speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke at a conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Friday.

Analysts say global stock trading will likely remain thin pending the outcome of that meeting, as investors are cautious about taking risky bets with so many unclear signals on the direction of the economy.

The U.S. Commerce Department announced Wednesday that the American economy grew at a 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, yet another signal the world's No. 1 economy is experiencing a modest recovery.

Though the revision was bigger than an initial estimate of 1.5 percent, the news was a discouraging factor in the sense that it suggests no major monetary easing is likely, said Jackson Wong of Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong.

With China due for a major change in the Communist Party leadership, the share benchmark there dropped to a three-year low on Wednesday, with no sign of relief soon.

"We just don't have any catalyst. No rebound is likely without a major policy move," Wong said.

In Japan, a larger-than-expected 0.8 percent drop in retail sales in July from the year before added to worries over the economic outlook. Sony Corp. was down 2 percent while Yamada Denki Co., a major appliance retailer, dropped 4.4 percent.

In Europe overnight, the FTSE index of leading British shares fell 0.6 percent to close at 5,743.53, while France's CAC-40 pulled back 0.5 percent to 3,413.89. The DAX in Germany, meanwhile, eked out a gain of 0.1 percent at 7,010.57.

Investors are hoping the Federal Reserve will give the economy a fresh boost, and nothing in the U.S. central bank's "Beige Book" survey on how the economy is faring, released late Wednesday, would discourage the Fed from helping the economy.

That report showed the U.S. economy grew moderately in July and early August, and hiring was more robust than in the previous six-week period.

Strength in auto sales, tourism and home sales in July and early August offset weakness in manufacturing, it said.

Overshadowed by gloomy news from Europe, U.S. markets drew little encouragement from the upbeat data, with the Dow Jones industrial average ending the day nearly flat at 13,107.48 while the broader Standard & Poor's index edged 0.1 percent higher to 1,410.49.

The euro rose to $1.2545 from $1.2528 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar fell to 78.60 yen from 78.70 yen.

Benchmark oil for October delivery fell 53 cents to $94.96 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Two Australian Troops Killed In Afghanistan Helicopter Crash

Two Australians who were members of the NATO International Security Assistance Force were killed in a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan today, according to the Department of Defense.

While the cause of the crash is under investigation, the DoD reports:

There was no enemy activity in the area at the time of the crash.

The Los Angeles Times reports Australia has roughly 1,500 service members in Afghanistan. This month has been deadly for those troops:

Three other Australians died Wednesday in an "insider" shooting by an assailant in an Afghan military uniform -- an unusually large loss of life in a compressed period of time for a relatively small troop contingent.

The names of those killed haven't yet been released.

SEAL's book shows bin Laden raid up close

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Navy SEAL's firsthand account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden pulls back the veil on the secret operations conducted almost nightly by elite American forces against terrorist suspects.

Former SEAL Matt Bissonnette's account contradicted in key details the account of the raid presented by administration officials in the days after the May 2011 raid in Abbotabad, Pakistan, that killed the al-Qaida leader, and raised questions about whether the SEALs followed to the letter the order to use deadly force only if they deemed him a threat.

Bissonnette wrote that the SEALs spotted bin Laden at the top of a darkened hallway and shot him in the head even though they could not tell whether he was armed. Administration officials have described the SEALs shooting bin Laden only after he ducked back into a bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

Military experts said Wednesday that if Bissonnette's recollection is accurate, the SEALS made the right call to open fire on the terrorist mastermind who had plenty of time to reach for a weapon or explosives as they made their way up to the third level of the house where he hid.

Bissonnette wrote the book, "No Easy Day," under the pseudonym Mark Owen as one of the men in the room when they killed bin Laden. The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint. The Associated Press purchased a copy Tuesday.

For years, the primary weapon in the war on terror has been unmanned drones firing missiles from the sky. But the Bissonnette book reveals a more bloody war waged by special operators, one the public almost never gets to see close up.

The book offers intimate details of a special operations mission. The most memorable scenes are also the most human moments. Bissonnette describes one of the SEALs dressing the wounds of a woman who was shot when she lunged toward the raiders. In another scene, a terrified mother clutches her child, and a young girl identifies the dead man to the SEALs as Osama bin Laden, seemingly unaware of the significance of those words.

In that regard, the bin Laden raid seems destined to become an anachronism. Nearly every top al-Qaida figure killed by the United States since the 9/11 attacks has died in a remote-controlled strike by unmanned drone aircraft ? their deaths seen back in Washington via high-definition video. An estimated 80 top terrorist leaders have been killed in places like Pakistan and Yemen, according to The Long War Journal.com, which tracks such airborne strikes.

Special operations troops often conduct raids similar to the bin Laden strike a dozen times a night in Afghanistan, and previously in Iraq, killing thousands of mostly mid- and lower-level terrorists. It's all part of a war on terror that is winding down and giving way to the drone war outside traditional war zones, given the scheduled drawdown of most U.S. troops in Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

"No Easy Day" shows how routine such operations have become. But the public rarely hears about them. This raid to capture bin Laden, though, was historic.

The SEALS, according to Bissonnette's description, were prepared as they had been in other raids for a gunfight in close quarters, which likely would last only a few seconds, with no margin for error. By the time the SEALs reached the top floor of bin Laden's compound, roughly 15 minutes had passed, giving the terror leader adequate time to strap on a suicide vest or get a gun, he said.

Bissonnette says he was behind the point man going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. Near the top, he said, he heard two silenced shots fired by the first SEAL into the hallway. He wrote that the SEAL on point had seen a man peeking out of a door on the right side of the hallway, but Bissonnette could not tell from his vantage point whether the bullets hit the target.

The author writes that the man ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find him crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner. He and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sights on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless.

Once they wiped the blood off his face, they were convinced it was bin Laden.

The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor late Tuesday would not comment on the apparent contradiction between the administration's account and the book's version.

Bissonnette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, an administration lawyer told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said if bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should detain him.

"If they didn't feel like there was a threat, they would have captured him," co-author Kevin Maurer told the AP on Wednesday. "But from when they first hit the ground, all the way until they got to the third deck, they had encountered armed men, which made the use of force essential," said Maurer, a former AP reporter.

A former deputy judge advocate general for the Air Force defended the decision to shoot the man the SEALs saw in the hallway.

"In a confined space like that where it is clear that there are hostiles, the SEALs need to take reasonable steps to ensure their safety and accomplish the mission," said the former JAG, retired Maj. Gen. Charlie Dunlap, who now teaches at Duke University law school.

Bissonnette writes that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid. But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.

In an interview scheduled to air Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Bissonnette said the book was "not political whatsoever" and not timed to influence the upcoming national elections. He said it was to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and credit those whose work made the mission to get bin Laden a success.

"My worry from the beginning is, you know, it's a political season. This book is not political whatsoever. It doesn't bad-mouth either party, and we specifically chose Sept. 11 to keep it out of the politics. If these ? crazies on either side of the aisle want to make it political, then shame on them."

CBS said Bissonnette was disguised and his voice altered for the interview. The network used only his pseudonym and not his name.

The Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information, and could take legal action against Bissonnette.

In a statement provided to the AP, the SEAL author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

The book does include information not previously reported about specific CIA officers' involvement in the raid.

Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to the AP.

Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

Robot drivers learn to react like startled critters

13 hrs.

Robot drivers of the future may steer clear of potholes, toppled power lines and stray cats thanks to an artificial neural network modeled after the fear-response mechanism in mammals.

The system, called STARTLE, uses existing hardware and sensors to scan the environment for threats. If one is detected, it will cue other systems to deal with it swiftly.

The system is programmed to kick into gear when it notices something abnormal. That could be a pothole, which it focuses resources to steer around, or?a child running out into the street after a soccer ball, prompting it to hit the brakes.

New Scientist has the details:

The design mimics the amygdala, which provides a rapid response to threats. The amygdala helps small animals to deal with complex, fast-changing surroundings, allowing them to ignore most sensory stimuli.

STARTLE was developed Roke Manor Research, a Hampshire, England, based research and development firm that boasts a ?diverse portfolio of products protecting military people and platforms against a constantly changing threat.?

With that kind of background, we can expect to see STARTLE outfitted on tanks and Humvees, but this type of technology will almost certainly find a home in the robot cars destined to soon clog our roadways.?

In fact, similar safety mechanisms are under development at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where robotic co-pilots take over the wheel when it senses a driver is about to crash.

The human remains were removed from Wrangell, in Southeast Alaska. No funerary objects are present. The human remains are consistent with Native American morphology, as evidenced through tooth wear as well as the presence of wormian bones. The town of Wrangell, located on Wrangell Island, was aboriginally within the southern Tlingit tribal group of the Stikine (De Laguna 1990, Goldschmidt and Haas 1998, Smythe 1994). Real estate agent wants review of signatures in - WTVR 6

Posted on: 6:22 pm, August 24, 2012, by Nick Dutton, updated on: 06:55pm, August 24, 2012

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) ? A real estate agent who failed to get enough verified registered voters to sign his petition for Richmond mayor is mounting a legal challenge to get his name on the November ballot.

?For me, it?s been kind of hurry up and wait,? said?Michael ?Ryan Jr.??It?s only fair that if you?re disqualified that we sit down and look at why you?re disqualified, because people do make mistakes,? said Ryan.

According the City Registrar, the 46-year-old did not turn in enough verified registered voters on his petition in several districts. And since there is no appeals process, he and his attorney?s filed suit last month.

Kirk Showalter, an attorney for the city registrar, denied that Ryan was wrongfully kicked off the ballot. In a response to the candidate Friday, Showalter?said the lawsuit be thrown out.

?It?s unfortunate because it?s a waste of people?s time, energy, and taxpayer?s money,? said Ryan.

Goldman believes they can reach an agreement with the city registrar?s attorney to review Ryan?s signatures. After all, that?s what officials did with?Tichi Pinkney-Eppes, a Richmond?school board candidate who was told her signatures weren?t valid.

?They did the same thing in the previous case with Ms. Eppes that we won,? said Paul Goldman, Michael Ryan?s attorney. ?They made the same denials and then they were forced to change their mind. I think the same thing is going to happen here.?

However, a judge could decide?in Ryan?s case if the attorneys for the city registrar and Michael Ryan Jr. fail to reach an agreement.

?It?s unfortunate that when you?re trying to enforce you basic rights that all citizens should have [and] there doesn?t seem to be any real interest among the leadership in the city of Richmond to make this happen,? said Goldman.

Goldman said he is confident Michael Ryan will get the review that he is believes the candidate is entitled to.

CBS 6 News? Sandra Jones tried to reach William Turner, an attorney for the city registrar, but he had not yet returned her phone calls.

Gettysburg College's time to 'GIV'

A group of Gettysburg College students sat sullenly around a cafeteria table early Friday morning. They were completely quiet. All out of ideas, they didn't have much to talk about.

"Our bills are more than our income," freshman Emma Rule said. "We have no money, so we aren't allowed to go anywhere or do anything."

Bills and income are not typically the concerns of students during their first week of college, but then again, these were not typical students. At "Gettysburg Is Volunteering Day," the members of the class of 2016 were told to be adults in an impoverished family, learning the ins and outs of budgeting and social services.

In this poverty simulation Rule belonged to a family of five.

Gettysburg College freshman Rebecca Johnson, middle, learns about budget management while buying food at an imaginary grocery store run by juniors Alexandra Petkova, left, and Kelly Hagerty. Students were participating in a poverty simulation on Friday morning as part of the Gettysburg College GIV Day. (THE EVENING SUN SHANE DUNLAP)

The father was a college-educated computer programmer who had lost his job. The mother worked full-time as a secretary at a local hospital and there were three children still in school. In just a few months, the family found themselves in a very troubling financial situation as the dad's unemployment checks ran out. It was exactly the kind of situation the college's Center for Public Service wanted the students to be in.

"We are helping you begin to understand social justice issues," college president Janet Morgan Riggs said to students. "We want you to think critically and act compassionately."

Students were given a fixed income and a set number of bills to pay and told to feed their families. Over the course of the simulation, a

series of life events were thrown at them - injuries, household repairs, increased daycare needs.

"It's very overwhelming," Meredith Tombs said as she applied for food stamps at the fake social-services agency. "The money we had really wasn't enough. I have always taken it for granted that food would always be there."

In welcoming the students to Adams County, Gettysburg College wanted to make them aware of just how much they take for granted. After the simulation, students were taken to community organizations throughout the borough and educated on the struggles facing residents.

At the South Central Community Action Programs food shelter, Micheline Sweeney identified one of those struggles.

"Food insecurity is a big problem here," Sweeney, of SCCAP's emergency service supportive staff said. "Because of the economy the number of families who come here keeps increasing."

Throughout Adams County, food pantries serve 2,535 people every month and the pantries rely almost entirely on volunteers to organize food shipments and pack boxes. On Friday Gettysburg College students lent a hand, filling bags of food to go out to local residents.

"Families are really appreciative of what you guys do," Juan Canel, an

upperclassman and regular community volunteer said.

Canel hopes that the program will encourage students to continue to volunteer throughout the school year.

So far, it already seems to be on that track. Now in its 22nd year, GIV Day has become so popular that some freshmen were turned away due over-occupancy.

"It's really important that we are a pillar of the community here at Gettysburg College," president Riggs said. "We want to make sure our students are offering assistance to those in the local community."

GIV Day also encouraged students to learn from the town surrounding them, to gain new perspectives and to break down stereotypes.

"There is always this thought that people who have a college education are always well off," Sara Mater, a student participant said. "But that is not always the case. You don't know what the situation is."

In harder economic times, those stereotypes about food stamps and homelessness continue to break down.

"A lot of times we get families in here who have never needed help before," Sweeney, of the food pantry said. "And for the most part we bend over backward to help them because we know that they really had to swallow their pride in order to come in here."

Student organizer Yauo Liu has certainly come to understand that. After putting a lot of time and energy into making GIV Day a success, she addressed the new student body.

"Ask yourself, why do people live in poverty? Why do immigrants come to this country?" Liu said. "Then take it a step further, ask how we can challenge the status quo. How can we encourage social change?"

3 Article Reviews About Gluten-Free Makeup, Coffee, and Waist ...

Would You Ever Consider a Gluten-Free Makeup?

In this article review, I will feature an article post from Glamour that leaves us a question whether gluten-free makeups are sensible or not.

We all understand the good effects of gluten-free food. However, who would ever imagine that makeups can have the same characteristics too. The author of the article received a press release message in her inbox and verified that such gluten-free makeups exist now in the market. The particular brand she mentioned was Sebamed.

Gluten is major concern when it comes to healthy food consumption. But experts seem to never catch the point of having gluten-free makeups. The author of the article emphasized that gluten make-ups can?t be eaten and it?s not a big deal or issue whether a makeup contains gluten ingredients or none. You can?t ingest it and therefore, it is not harmful to your health.

In my own opinion, this is maybe just a marketing strategy to entice people with their new product lines. But when you come to think about it seriously, it is really not a big factor.

To view the article that I am referring to, just go to Health and Beauty: Do You Really Need Gluten-Free Makeup?

Drinking Coffee Everyday For Long Life?

I?ve read an article in Well that presents eye-catching information regarding the effects of drinking coffee regularly.

Tara Parker-Pope featured a study report published in the National Institutes of Health stating that drinking coffee in a regular basis promotes longer life. Specifically, researchers mentioned that coffee can reduce the risk diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, and infections. This conclusion was based from the data of 229,119 men and 173,141 women that were members of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) between 1995 and 1996.

On the other hand, some experts find it difficult to confer with the conclusion because it is very difficult to correlate coffee and health. Coffee is always known as a complement for cigarettes. Therefore, it is hard to trace whether coffee can be beneficial or not. In addition, they say that coffee contains caffeine that can stimulate the increase of heart and blood pressure.

However, with the given report from a reliable source, it seems that the government is promoting coffee dosage every morning. Results suggest that coffee is beneficial regardless of it is caffeinated or decaffeinated. But according to Neal D. Freeman, lead author and investigator of the National Cancer Institute, we should be careful in interpreting such major impact data to the public.

Waist Circumference as a Basis for Health Condition

I?ve read some interesting and unique information in another article in Glamour stating that waist circumference can tell something relevant towards our health condition.

According to the author of the article, experts have long examined that body mass index (BMI) is not much of an effective way to determine the health status of a particular person. This is because almost all people have different built. However, researchers from Tufts University just recently found out that measuring your waist circumference can correlate with health condition.

After reviewing 31 articles, these researchers indicate that a waist circumference and waist to height ratio measurement can identify health condition risks such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, body fat levels, and metabolic syndrome. In the case of pregnant women, a waist circumference greater than 35 is categorized under health problem risks.

As of now, these researchers are still figuring out the best measurement for a good health condition. To know specific information, just read at Health Challenge: Measure Your Waist! What It Can Tell About Your Health.

Study: Obesity surgery can help prevent diabetes

Doctors are reporting a new benefit from weight-loss surgery ? preventing diabetes. Far fewer obese people developed that disease if they had stomach-shrinking operations rather than usual care to try to slim down, a large study in Sweden found.

The results, published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, are provoking fresh debate about when adjustable bands and other bariatric procedures should be offered.

It is "provocative and exciting" that surgery can prevent diabetes, but it is "impractical and unjustified" to think of doing it on millions of obese adults, Dr. Danny Jacobs, a Duke University surgeon, wrote in a commentary in the medical journal.

Dr. Mitchell Roslin, bariatric surgery chief at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, disagreed.

"If surgery is the only treatment we have, we have to accept the cost ramifications of that" and give up "the naive notion" that we can just teach severely obese people how to lose weight, said Roslin, who consults for some makers of bariatric surgery equipment.

Millions of Americans have Type 2 diabetes brought on by obesity. Earlier this year, two studies showed that obesity surgery can reverse diabetes and keep it away for many years, possibly for good.

The new study went a step further, to see if it could prevent diabetes in the first place among people who are obese.

Researchers led by Dr. Lars Sj?str?m of Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, tracked 1,658 patients who had bariatric surgery ? mostly bands and stomach stapling ? and 1,771 similar patients who just got usual care and counseling on how to lose weight.

None had diabetes when the study began. After about 10 years on average among those still in the study, 392 developed diabetes in the usual care group versus 110 in the surgery group. Researchers calculated that surgery had reduced the odds of getting diabetes by 78 percent.

That is "absolutely remarkable," said Dr. Philip Schauer, a Cleveland Clinic surgeon who also has consulted for some surgery equipment makers and thinks surgery should be used more often for obesity.

Weight-loss surgery costs $15,000 to $25,000, and Medicare often covers it for diabetics. Proponents note that complications of diabetes and obesity are expensive, too, especially if dialysis or a kidney transplant is needed.

The government recently lowered the weight limits for gastric band surgery for those with diabetes or heart disease.

?Why does my horse get itchy when the weather warms up?

The short answer to this question is that there are more insects around.

A more specific question could be why is my horse scratching when the one next door isn?t?

It really all comes down to a strong, sound immune system.? Everything we do with our animals should be with that in mind.? Every time we load them with chemicals we are depleting their immune system and making them vulnerable to parasites, bacterias and viruses.? A strong animal can naturally resist these things.

Looking at the itch specifically, this is the pattern we find and treat over and over again.

Initially the body becomes loaded up with toxins from medications, vaccinations, sprays in the air and on the ground.? To manage toxins a body will attempt to expel them through the safest path ? ideally the bowel but generally it will be through the skin.? Releasing through the skin is acidic and uncomfortable.? This discharge will cause the horse to rub the skin to relieve the uncomfortable feeling.? Then the damaged skin becomes a breeding ground for mites which will then cause itching for a whole new reason.

When the owner finds mites, they do the natural thing and layer the horse with chemicals to kill the mites and considering the first part of this article, we have just aggrevated an already toxic situation.? This is the rollercoaster the horse owners find themselves on.

For our clients, we always start with a good detox, then we evict the mites naturally and finally support the body to heal the skin.? This is a long term, natural healing of this annoying health issue.? Depending on the layering of toxins we sometimes need to repeat the process to get through the layers and if organ damage has been done, deeper healing is required.
