As March is on, authorities are out to celebrate the National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. To aware more people about the illness and save maximum lives from this form of cancer, Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital has started offering free and take-home colorectal screening kits enabling people to get themselves checked against the illness.
Colon cancer is equally dangerous as any other cancer type. According to medical professionals, it is the second deadliest form of cancer that is causing many cancer deaths in the nation. Regular screening can save 60 % of older aged people, who are suffering from the cancer type, say hospital officials.
During the month, Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital has started offering people with free fecal occult blood test for their cancer identification (if they are suffering), enabling them to early detect the cancer and the doctors to immediately start colonoscopy, if patients' test results are out positive.
People can get their testing kits only during business hours from the laboratories at Franciscan St. Anthony Health, 301 W. Homer St., Michigan City; HealthPartners, 1225 E. Coolspring Ave., Michigan City; Franciscan Omni Health & Fitness, 810 Michael Drive, Chesterton.
People are suggested to return their complete kits to Franciscan St. Anthony Health's laboratory with the provided envelope by April 6. People are being advised to take their first step to prevent colorectal cancer by getting themselves checked during the campaigning.
Colon Cancer Solutions, a local nonprofit organization is also serving the noble cause by requesting more number of people to get screened for the illness and if tested positive, to get it medicated and prevented at the earlier stage only.
Ms. Rushda Mumtaz, M. D., a board-certified gastroenterologist on the medical staff at Tempe St. Luke's Hospital, St. Luke's Medical Center, has also answered several questions upon colorectal cancer to make more people learn about it and its symptoms.
