On Friday, over a dozen members fanned out in the central square, emblematic of what many still consider an ongoing revolution, to take up positions among thousands of demonstrators protesting President Mohammed Morsi?s rule. (AP) ? Amid a growing number of brutal attacks on women protesters in Egypt, one stood out: A mob of men on Cairo's Tahrir Square raped a 19-year-old woman with a sharp object, cutting her genitals in an attack that forced her to undergo emergency surgery.

The assault was one of the worst in a string of attacks over the past year in which women have been stripped, groped and raped at demonstrations in Egypt. This past week alone, while mass protests filled city squares around the country, more than two dozen new sexual attacks were reported ? a wave that activists call the worst in years and describe as the darkest stain on the country's opposition street movement.

In response, several groups have arisen to protect female demonstrators. On Friday, men and women clad in bright neon vests and hardhats patrolling Cairo's iconic square were part of the latest organization to emerge: Tahrir Bodyguard.

Soraya Bahgat said she founded the group using social media after seeing television footage last November of a mob of men attacking a woman and tearing off her clothes. She had been on the way to a demonstration at Tahrir herself, but instead stayed in, gripped with fear.

"It was sickening. They were dragging her through the street," said the 29-year-old, who works as a human resources manager. "I couldn't imagine something so horrific, and something that fundamentally would keep women from exercising their right to assembly like anyone else. No one should be prevented from demonstrating."

Such is the concern that the United Nations on Thursday demanded authorities to act to bring perpetrators to justice, saying it had reports of 25 sexual assaults on women in Tahrir rallies over the past week. Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment/Assault, which also patrols the square, reported 19 incidents on one day alone. It was January 25th ? the second anniversary of the start of the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

It was in one of the attacks on the 25th that a mob set upon the 19-year-old woman in Tahrir, raping her with a bladed object, activists said.

"She had a laceration in her genitals and bite marks all over her body," said Hussein Elshafei, whose group Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment/Assault helped get the 19-year-old out of the crowd and to safety. "She was taken to hospital and remained there for a few days where she had an emergency surgery."

A health official confirmed the attack and injuries on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

Extraordinary violence has been used in more than one attack. Human rights campaigner Amnesty International says that several meet the definition of rape, including penetration with fingers and sharp objects. Frequently, fights with knives and blunt weapons break out when people try to stop the attacks, blurring the lines between those helping and the perpetrators.

"Testimonies from victims and those attempting to save them paint a frightening picture: tens if not hundreds of men surrounding the victims with countless hands tearing-off clothes and veils, unzipping trousers and groping breasts, nipples and backsides," Amnesty's Egypt researcher Diana Eltahawy wrote in a blog post on Friday.

The activists say they can expect little help from the police, who rarely intervene in such cases and who they accuse of failing to properly investigate allegations. Uniforms are almost never seen at Tahrir during demonstrations except at the fringes, where riot police regularly clash with rock-throwing youths.

Sexual harassment in Egypt is not a new phenomenon. Women on the streets frequently are subjected to everything from stares to cat-calls and attempts to grab them. In previous years, there were instances of young men ganging up to grope girls in parks or on main boulevards during public holidays when large crowds are on the street.

The trend however has worsened since the 2011 uprising, which saw a general collapse of security and rise in crime after the fall of Mubarak. This past June, as women marched through Tahrir demanding an end to harassment, a crowd assaulted them, overwhelming their male guardians and molesting several of the female marchers. And in October during Eid al-Adha, Islam's biggest holiday, activists trying to protect women were harassed themselves, as hordes of all-male onlookers shouted taunts and blew air horns at them.

Experts, activists and media have attributed the harassment to a wide range of possible factors. Some blame widespread unemployment or underemployment among youth. Others cite an attitude in the conservative nation that women should not be out in public and thus those who are are fair game. Activists have speculated that some attacks are planned, aiming to discredit the protesters or to dissuade women from joining them.

The patrols, which aim to deter potential assailants and evacuate women under assault, have prompted a backlash from harassers.

"We've had people beaten up, and in one instance a crowd ? some of whom were carrying knives ? tried to break into one of our locations," said ElShafei. "Threats are a regular occurrence."

In Tahrir on Friday, the neon-vested team said they had only had to make three interventions during the day's protest, which they attributed to their high visibility and a modest turnout in the square. With other groups present, including the one ElShafei works for, dozens of volunteers could be seen in the crowds. Violence that night was concentrated on the other side of the city, where thousands of protesters denouncing the president marched on his palace and clashed with security forces firing tear gas and water cannons.

It was the eighth day of the country's latest wave of political violence. Around 60 people have been killed in protests, rioting and clashes over the past week, the worst period of crisis since the fall of Mubarak. Observers say the protests are taking a dangerous turn as rival groups supporting and opposing Morsi's Islamist backers have taken matters into their own hands.

"I think people are getting more violent. It's been two years now and they are battle hardened," said Mohammed Osama, a 35-year-old computer engineer and black belt in judo who said he joined the bodyguard group after being slashed with a knife in street violence in his hometown of Alexandria. He said that after experiencing violence himself, he wanted to do something to prevent it from striking others.

"Individual efforts aren't enough ? organization is needed. And it's the honorable thing to do," he said in measured tones, a scar visible under his eye.

As for the perpetrators of the attacks, he described them as a "social disease."

"Sometimes attacks are organized, other times it's people profiting from chaos on the streets, said Osama. "Ignorance and poverty is part of the problem, but for those who seek to victimize others, they now have another thing coming."

Drill-for-dollars underground dentist jailed for assault

PLANO, Texas ? Inside the unassuming ranch-style house, investigators discovered things like an X-ray machine, grinders, syringes, surgical instruments and anesthetics.

Police say the homeowner, 63-year-old Jose Santiago Delao, had been running an underground dental clinic in the aging suburban Dallas neighborhood for years: pulling teeth and filling cavities, among other procedures.

The case against Delao, arrested Jan. 24 for practicing without a license, offers insight into a world of backyard dentistry that caters to illegal citizens, the uninsured and others who can?t find affordable dental care.

Delao admits he skirted the law, but isn?t remorseful.

?Jesus Christ didn?t need or didn?t have a license,? Jose Delao told Yahoo News during a jailhouse interview. ?People hurt and they needed it. People didn?t have enough money to visit the regular dentist.?

Delao, a former dental lab technician, claims he couldn?t turn his back.

?It broke my heart,? he said, tapping his chest, ?because I have the experience.?

But authorities say Delao, a native of Costa Rica, has never been a licensed dentist in Texas. If convicted, he could get two to 10 years in prison.

?This guy was doing some pretty intense work in some cases,? said Plano police officer David Tilley.

Delao's secret unraveled in mid-January when a woman complained to police about a $75 molar repair that had left her unable to open her mouth and caused a clicking sound in her ear for several days.

The woman, who had gone to Delao on the recommendation of a church friend, also told officers the man kept her from leaving his makeshift clinic once she arrived.

?Jose S. Delao refused to let her leave after he had her in the dental chair,? a detective wrote in a police warrant. ?She raised her hand to indicate she was feeling pain and Jose Delao pushed her hand back down and told her to stop complaining.?

Any possible assault-related charges are still under investigation. Delao denied the accusations in an interview with Yahoo News.

A survey of published news reports shows that as many as eight such underground dental clinics have been shutdown in the U.S. since last summer.

?I would clearly classify it as a problem,? said Dr. Frank Catalanotto, chair of the Department of Community Dentistry at the University of Florida. ?It is potentially a big problem.?

Indeed, recent headlines from across the country, chronicle similar operations:

  • Police arrest 1 in rogue dentistry at Moorpark apartment
  • Woman without license to practice treated as many as 30 patients daily
  • 'Operation Tooth Fairy' busts unlicensed Davie dentist

In September, Miami police arrested an 81-year-old illegal dentist whose shoddy work at his home left a 14-year-old girl?s mouth permanently disfigured. Her mother, who had no dental insurance, hoped the man could fix a chipped tooth for cheap. Instead, police said, he filed four of the teen?s front teeth to the gums and left her with a serious infection.

?It just looked awful,? said Dr. Catalanotto, whose students and faculty cared for the girl after the incident.

An official with the American Dental Association says it doesn?t track the number of rogue practices, but acknowledged the association has heard stories of patients being treated in vans, warehouses and apartment bathrooms.

?People have extremely serious and unmet needs for oral healthcare,? said Julia Paradise, an associate director at the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured.

The Kaiser Family Foundation, a non-profit think tank focused on major medical issues, reports the number of adults without dental coverage is three times as large as the number of adults without health insurance coverage and that 30 percent of children with private health insurance are uninsured for dental care. More than one in five low-income adults reported that they had not had a dental visit in five years or more, or had never had a visit, the foundation wrote in a 2012 study.

Kaiser doesn?t keep stats on unlicensed dentists, but Paradise said it?s troubling to know it?s a choice some patients make.

?The solution is to provide the kind of care and access to care that people need so that there isn?t a space or the need for people to seek care that isn?t safe,? she said.

House where Delao practiced dentistry (Jason Sickles)

From behind bars, Delao maintained he was operating safely.

?I can pull a tooth,? he said. ?I have the experience.?

When asked if he ever applied to be a dentist in the U.S. Delao replied, ?Not really, but I have the degree.?

He said a four-year degree in dental lab technology from Costa Rica and 27 years of working as a technician in the U.S. prepared him to practice. Yahoo News could not verify his education or employment history, but acquaintances vouched for his character.

?He?s a friendly guy,? said Rubia Albarenga, a travel agent who has known Delao for 10 years. ?He has always been honest to us and is a great customer. He was always very respectful. We feel sorry for him.?

Dr. Catalanotto said making molds and dentures as a lab tech doesn?t qualify someone to diagnose patients. He worries about the people who opt for such unlicensed caregivers.

?You?re doing something potentially very dangerous to your health,? Dr. Catalanotto said. ?You would probably have concerns about infection control issues and catching a communicable disease from unclean instruments. There?s a variety of concerns.?

Investigators believe Delao, who lived alone, had been treating people inside his modest 1,500-square-foot home for four years.

He said his cash only, no-questions-asked operation drew one to two patients a day. ?I helped undocumented people, single mothers and uninsured people,? he said.

Delao said he charged $50 for what might cost $250 elsewhere.

?Only enough to pay my bills,? he said.

Business usually came word of mouth, but news of Delao?s arrest didn?t travel fast enough to stop people from showing up after he was jailed. His neighbor posted a sign on her door, ?Aqui No Vive Dentista? (dentist doesn?t live here).

?I have a problem with people banging on the door morning, noon and night,? Francisca Ramos said this week.

Mickelson misses chance for tour 36-hole record

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) ? Phil Mickelson made a mess of his final hole in the second round of the Phoenix Open, costing him another shot at history.

A day after his putt for a 59 curled 180 degrees and stay out, Lefty missed a chance to break the PGA Tour's 36-hole scoring record Friday when he finished with a double bogey.

"You always remember kind of the last hole, the last putt," Mickelson said. "But I think it's very possible that's going to help me because it's got me refocused, that I cannot ease up on a single shot. I've got to be really focused. These guys are going to make a lot of birdies and I've got to get after it and cannot make those kinds of mistakes."

Mickelson followed his opening 60 with a 65 to reach 17-under 125, a stroke off the tour record for the first two rounds of a tournament set by Pat Perez in the 2009 Bob Hope Classic and matched by David Toms at Colonial in 2011.

"Unfortunately, I made a double on the last hole and didn't finish the way I wanted to," Mickelson said. "But I think it's a good example of what can happen on this course. You can make a lot of birdies and eagles, make up a lot of ground, but there's a lot of water and trouble there that if you misstep you can easily make bogeys and double."

His drive on No. 18 bounced into the left-side water hazard and, after a penalty drop, he still had a chance to get up down for par and the record.

But he didn't get enough on his approach shot, with the ball landing on the green and rolling off the front edge. His chip got away from him a bit, running 7 feet past, and his bogey putt slid by to the left, leaving him with a share of the Phoenix Open 36-hole record set by Mark Calcavecchia in 2001.

"I hit a good shot, I thought," Mickelson said. "I tried to start it right down the middle and hold it into the wind. It just leaked a little bit left. I still thought it was up. ... Then I hit a poor wedge from there. But the tee shot I didn't think was going to be in the water at any point."

The double bogey left him four strokes ahead of Bill Haas and five in front of Keegan Bradley and Brandt Snedeker. Haas shot a 64, Bradley 63, and Snedeker 66.

Mickelson will play alongside Haas and Bradley in the third round.

"Bill and I have played on a Presidents Cup team, and Keegan and I have been partners in the Ryder Cup and had an incredibly emotional and fun experience together as partners," Mickelson said. "We're going to have a fun day tomorrow."

Mickelson, the winner at TPC Scottsdale in 1996 and 2005, parred the first six holes and played the next 11 in 8 under before the lapse on 18.

The 42-year-old former Arizona State star made a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-4 ninth ? the hole where he missed the putt for a 59 on Thursday ? and overpowered the par-5 15th for an eagle, hitting to 4 feet after a 358-yard drive.

"I felt really comfortable on the tee box, so I kind of let one go and caught a hold of it and ended up having 191 to the pin," Mickelson said. "It was only 186 to the front, and I hit a hard 8-iron. There was a little bit of helping wind."

After a par on the par-3 16th that drew boos from the rowdy fans on the stadium hole when his tee shot trickled into the fringe, he drove the green on the 344-yard 17th and two-putted from 70 feet ? leaving his eagle try a foot short ? for birdie.

Bradley also eagled the 15th, hitting a 350-yard drive and a 7-iron approach to 8 feet.

"I just smashed a driver down there," Bradley said. "I had been hitting 3-wood and I'm driving the ball so well that I just decided to rip driver down there."

He birdied the 16th, hitting to 5 feet.

"It reminds me of when I go to Fenway Park," Bradley said. "There's always like a murmur. ... It's really cool. I dig it. I wish there was more holes like that out here."

He birdied Nos. 5-8 on his back nine, holing putts of 10 15, 20 and 8 feet.

"It was such a relief to shoot a good number," Bradley said. "I've been playing so well this whole year and haven't made many putts. Today, the putts started to go in."

Haas began play on No. 10 and made the turn at 6-under 30.

"We all know the way the course is playing, if there's no wind on the weekend, you've just got to keep making birdies," Haas said.

Last year in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera, Haas beat Mickelson and Bradley with a 45-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff.

"It's just another day. It's moving day," Haas said. "Hopefully, I can move up the leaderboard and he (Mickelson) doesn't go too crazy."

DIVOTS: Jason Dufner, paired with Mickelson and Rickie Fowler, missed the cut by a stroke to end the tour's longest active streak at 22. Dufner shot 68-71, leaving Ian Poulter with the longest current streak at 16. Fowler also shot 68-71 to drop out. ... Mike Weir failed to advance a week after ending a streak of 17 missed cuts that dated to July 2001. He shot 69-73. ... Golf Channel will have "spotlight" coverage" of the 15th, 16th and 17th holes Saturday and Sunday, opposite the first two hours of NBC's regular broadcast. The sister networks will stagger commercial breaks. ... Masters champion Bubba Watson was 8 under after his second straight 67. He played through strep throat to tie for fourth in the season-opening Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, and withdrew last week in San Diego because of the flu. ... Defending champion Kyle Stanley shot a 71 to make the cut by a stroke at 4 under.

Obama: Contracting economy GOP's fault

Be honest, now. Did you really expect Obama to take responsibility for anything?

The Hill:

White House press secretary Jay Carney laid the blame for a surprise economic contraction squarely at the feet of congressional Republicans Wednesday, saying?economic threats during the "fiscal cliff" negotiations had prevented important defense spending.

"Our economy is facing a major headwinds, and that's Republicans in Congress," Carney said.

The Commerce Department projected Wednesday that the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) shrank by 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Carney said that was partially attributable to the threat of sequestration, which would implement across-the-board spending cuts if a long-term deficit deal is not reached.

"This is political brinkmanship that results in one primary victim. That's American taxpayers and the American middle class," Carney said, acknowledging the GDP projection was bad news.?

"I don't think anytime you see a reduction in economic growth that it's good news," he said.?

Carney said economic observers were "rightly appalled" by the threat of sequestration or default to drive a debt deal, and charged that Republicans were harming the economy to the benefit of the wealthiest Americans.

"It can't be we'll let sequester kick in because we insist tax loopholes remain in place for corporate jet-owners," Carney said.

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), pointed the finger of blame for the still-looming sequester back at the White House.?

"These arbitrary, automatic cuts were a creation and demand of the White House in 2011," said Buck. "Twice the House has passed legislation to replace them with common sense cuts and reforms. If there was any uncertainty late last year about the sequester, it was because the Democratic-controlled Senate, per usual, never lifted a finger to pass a plan to replace it."

Sequestration was the president's idea. The House passed budget cuts to replace the sequester. Senate Democrats never considered the package.

And the economic contraction in the 4th quarter - only partially due to delayed defense spending anyway - is all the fault of the GOP?

It doesn't get any more brazen than this. Welcome to the new reality - created, nurtured, promoted, and sold by an administration that doesn't have to work very hard to get it's distorted and skewed version of the truth out to the masses thanks to a press corps that has thrown in with the Democrats.

Being rewarded for acting and governing irresponsibly will only lead to disaster. Good thing the GOP will always be there to take the blame.
