Book says Roger Ailes called Obama 'lazy' and Biden 'dumb as an ...

Roger Ailes, president of Fox News Channel, is the subject of a new biography in which he's quoted as saying President Obama is "lazy."

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

Fox News chief Roger Ailes doesn't mince words in a new biography: President Obama is "lazy" and Vice President Joe Biden is "dumb as an ashtray."

But it's not just Democrats who get withering reviews from the conservative media icon. Ailes suggests that Sen. Marco Rubio is too soft and Newt Gingrich is a "sore loser" and an unprintable reference to male anatomy.

The blunt characterizations appear in Vanity Fair's adapted excerpt of "Roger Ailes: Off Camera," by Zev Chafets. Ailes cooperated with the book, which will be published March 19.

Fox News chief Roger Ailes is quoted in a new biography as saying he likes Joe Biden but thinks the vice president is "dumb as an ashtray."

The comment about Obama was reportedly made during last year's presidential primary season as Ailes was briefed about Democratic operative Hilary Rosen's remark that Ann Romney had never worked a day in her life.

?Obama?s the one who never worked a day in his life. He never earned a penny that wasn?t public money. How many fund-raisers does he attend every week? How often does he play basketball and golf? I wish I had that kind of time," Ailes said, according to the excerpt.

"He?s lazy, but the media won?t report that,? he said, then added that Obama had admitted being lazy in an interview with Barbara Walters.

In a 2011 interview with Walters, Obama said, "There is a deep down, underneath all the work I do, I think there?s a laziness in me," adding, "It?s probably from, you know, growing up in Hawaii, and it?s sunny outside and sitting on the beach.??

?

During the briefing on Rosen, Ailes also was told that Gingrich -- a former Fox commentator -- complained the network's support for Mitt Romney had hurt his chances.

"Brush him back," Ailes told his spokesman, according to Vanity Fair. "He's a sore loser and if he had won, he would have been a sore winner." Then he followed up with an off-color five-letter insult.

At a Fox Latino staff meeting, Ailes revealed he liked Rubio but didn't know if he was vice-presidential material.

"He's a nice guy and that role requires kicking the crap out of your opponents," he said.

"I have a soft spot for Joe Biden," he added. "I like him. But he's dumb as an ashtray."

Asked whether Ailes stands by the remarks, Fox News issued a statement: "Vanity Fair excerpts a fraction of a 272-page book so it would be impractical to comment without having read the entire body of work in context.?

The book says Ailes, 72, revels in his role as a free-wheeling tough guy but also has a fatalistic streak and think's he'll be dead within a decade.

Chafets wrote that he asked Ailes what he thinks heaven will be like.

?I?m pretty sure that God?s got a sense of humor,? he said. ?I think he gets a laugh out of me from time to time, so I suppose things will be all right.?

Asked what would happen if God was a liberal, Ailes replied, ?Well, hell, if God?s a liberal, that?s his business...But I doubt very much that he is. He?s got a good heart.??

Kennedy Center to host hip-hop festival in 2014

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Hip-hop artists including rappers Nas and Somalia-born K'naan will take center stage in an unexpected place next year, highlighting their generation and art form alongside opera, ballet and theater at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

The center, a memorial to President John F. Kennedy, announced Tuesday that its 2013-2014 season would include the weeklong festival "One Mic: Hip-Hop Culture Worldwide." It also plans to feature an international theater festival with works from at least 10 different nations and new American works commissioned in theater, opera and music.

The 2014 hip-hop festival will open with Nas rapping with musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra on music from his classic debut album "Illmatic." The festival will also feature Puerto Rican musicians Calle 13 and a graffiti exhibition.

The mix of rap, DJing and graffiti with more traditional arts at one of the nation's busiest performing arts centers will make the year unique, Kennedy Center President Michael Kaiser said.

"Hip-hop is clearly something new and different for us," Kaiser said, noting the center had also created festivals around country music and gospel, which are also less familiar in its concert halls. "I think to do something very current is important. We're trying to speak to many different audiences."

The season will include more than 2,000 performances in a wide array of theater, music and dance. It includes the center's first international festival devoted to theater, featuring companies from Chile, China, Israel, Kuwait and the United Kingdom, among other places.

Separately, the Kennedy Center will host the Bolshoi ballet, which is especially notable because of recent scandal in the famed Russian dance company. In January, an assailant threw acid in the face of the company's artistic director, possibly in retaliation for his selection of certain dancers over others for coveted roles. Police in Moscow announced Tuesday that a suspect has been detained.

In musical theater, the Kennedy Center is developing a new production of Henry Krieger and Bill Russell's "Side Show," with La Jolla Playhouse ? the first major revival since the musical's original 1997 run on Broadway. Oscar-winning director Bill Condon, who recently directed both parts of the "Twilight" series "Breaking Dawn" is directing the show.

Opera star Renee Fleming will lead a three-day festival of "American Voices," examining the different ways Americans sing, from country to jazz and gospel to pop.

The Washington National Opera's season at the Kennedy Center will underscore its vision to embrace American and nontraditional productions. It includes a new holiday opera for families entitled "The Lion, the Unicorn and Me," with a score by musical theater composer Jeanine Tesori. It will tell the Christmas story from the perspective of the donkey. The season also will include the East Coast premiere of "Moby-Dick," Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde," and new productions of Verdi's "The Force of Destiny" and "The Magic Flute."

Kaiser said the season endeavors to make opera "more accessible to some audiences and ... more up-to-date for audiences ? but also putting a focus and an emphasis on the American achievement in the opera field."

In the year ahead, the National Symphony Orchestra will host a two-week festival combining new musical works with newly commissioned choreography in "New Moves: Symphony + Dance." The orchestra also will offer an homage to George Washington in a new co-commission and a performance of "Der Rosenkavalier," featuring Renee Fleming as a tribute to Richard Strauss' 150th birthday.

This is the last full programming slate Kaiser will lead at the center before stepping down at the end of 2014.

"For me, it was a very personal season," Kaiser said, as he prepares to help hand off leadership to a new president. "Every decade or so, an institution like this needs a fresh artistic voice."

SpaceX Dragon Thrusters Are Back Online - Business Insider

All four of the Dragon capsule's thrusters are working normally again, Elon Musk announced on twitter:

Without the thrusters, the capsule was gradually losing altitude, being pulled into the Earth by its gravity. The thrusters are being engaged to move the capsule into a higher orbit and will move it to the International Space Station.

Because of the thruster malfunction, the planned docking with the ISS tomorrow won't happen. It may happen on Sunday, but the date and time are still uncertain.

EARLIER:

Elon Musk just announced on twitter that the SpaceX team has gotten two of the Dragon Capsule's thrusters working, enough to get the capsule back under active control.

He also said in a press conference that the other two thrusters seem to be functional and should be fired up "within an hour," so, by 4:30 p.m. EST.

He then told reporters in a press conference that things are looking good.

"We've been deeply engaged in trying to figure out what went wrong with the Dragon thruster system and just moments ago we were able to bring the pods 1 and 4 online. We are now working to get 2 and 3 online as well. They are actually looking quite good.

I'm optimistic that we will be able to turn all four thruster pods on. And regain full control."

Thrusters 2 and 3 seem to be functional, but haven't been turned on yet.

The thrusters malfunctioned following launch this morning, and three were non operational. Since the Falcon 9 rocket deposited the SpaceX Dragon Capsule into space, it has been drifting aimlessly through space, instead of navigating its way to the space station as planned. It can stay up there for a few months, Musk said in the press conference.

"We noticed after separation we noticed that only one of the four thruster pods was ready to engage," Musk said. "We saw the oxidizer pressure in three of the four tanks was low. We spend that last several hours trying to fix the problem and we think we have. And if that's the case it will be a huge relief."

An issue with a propellant valve caused the malfunction, NASA says. Musk just said, "it looks like there was some blockage in the oxidizer pressurization and we've been able to free that blockage."

The thrusters are what move the capsule when it's docking with the ISS, so while the rocket successfully got the cargo to space, the Dragon can't maneuver into position to dock with the space station. The two they've gotten on line should be enough to make it to the space station, but three are needed for docking.

The capsule is SpaceX's second mission, funded by NASA, to deliver cargo to the International Space Station.

The first launch, in October, was a success.

Important control mechanism behind autoimmune diseases discovered

May 4, 2010 ? Researchers at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet have discovered a new control mechanism in our immune system. The discovery is of potential significance to the treatment of serious diseases such as MS (multiple sclerosis), rheumatoid arthritis, and SLE (Systemic lupus erythematosus).

"Now that we've started to understand the regulatory mechanisms involved in these autoimmune diseases, we are hopeful that new treatments can be found," says Mikael Karlsson, associate professor at the Department of Medicine at Karolinska Institutet in Solna, and one of the team behind the study now published in the highly reputed periodical, The Journal of Experimental Medicine.

An important component of our immune defence is a type of cell called a B cell. Normally, the job of these cells is to produce antibodies, which in turn bind to and neutralise invasive microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses. In people with an autoimmune disease, explains Dr Karlsson, these B cells actually have an injurious effect and instead of serving the body, are activated against its own tissues, which they start to break down.

Patients with SLE and other autoimmune diseases have lower levels of so-called NKT cells. Previously, it was not known what part these cells play in the origin and development of the disease; now, however, the research group at KI has shown that this deficiency is a contributory pathogenic factor.

"We've demonstrated that NKT cells can regulate how B cells become activated against healthy tissue, and that a lack of NKT cells results in greater misguided B cell activation," says Dr Karlsson. "So now we can mechanically link the NKT cell defect in patients to the disease."

The study also shows that the NKT cells directly impede faulty B cell activation, and that they do so early in the misdirected process. The team managed to inhibit the activity of pathogenic B cells by adding NKT cells -- a result that may one day lead to new types of treatment.

"This means that new treatments specifically targeting the protective NKT cells can help this patient group," concludes Dr Karlsson.
